It is a structure with a large surface up top and very little weight holding it down, so wind is the load it actually has to survive, not rain — and the storms that come through the Sandhills every summer are the test. That means posts set to depth in the sandy soil here, or anchored to a slab or deck framing that can genuinely take the pull, and beams notched and through-bolted rather than face-nailed on and hoped for. How much shade it gives is a design choice made before anything is cut: rafter spacing, the depth of the rafters, and which direction they run relative to the afternoon sun. Tighter spacing and deeper members mean more shade at three in the afternoon and a heavier-looking structure; wider spacing means dappled light and a lighter frame. If it is going over an existing patio or deck, that surface gets looked at first — a pergola built on top of framing that is already tired only makes the problem heavier.
